The waters around Coiba are a critical intersection on the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor, a “blue highway” for the ocean’s most majestic creatures. Nearly 800 species of fish, 33 species of sharks, and 20 species of cetaceans have been recorded here.
Humpback whales use these warm, protected shallows as calving grounds, and whale sharks congregate seasonally to feed. A recent genetic study revealed that whale sharks here are connected to populations as far away as the Arabian Gulf, proving that Coiba is a key global hub for this endangered species. Protecting these waters is a contribution to the health of the entire Pacific Ocean, and every visitor who witnesses these giants plays a part in that story.
